Chief minister Nitish Kumar day before yesterday directed the Central Public Works Department (CPWD), Ircon and other central agencies engaged in the upgradation of state highways to prepare detailed project reports by June so that work could begin by October.
The chief minister issued the order while reviewing the status of highways and rural roads with divisional commissioners and officials of the agencies, which had been assigned the job of upgrading and constructing the roads under the Rashtriya Sam Vikas Yojana and Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana.
Official sources said Nitish expressed displeasure over the delay in starting construction, a year after the projects were initiated.
Ircon and CPWD have to upgrade/construct 2382.47 km of state highways under a tripartite agreement between the ministry of shipping, road transport and highways, state road construction department and the two agencies on April 27 last year.
Road construction secretary Raj Kumar Singh told reporters that while CPWD had given the contract to upgrade 2,000 km of state highways, the rest would be upgraded by Ircon at Rs 1.5 crore per km, excluding the cost of major bridges.
