Patna, June 7 (PTI): The Bihar Government on Tuesday approved an outlay of Rs 1.3 crore for waiving off loans given to the 1989 Bhagalpur riot victims and decided to post four specialist doctors in primary health centre (PHCs) to reduce the mortality rate among women and children.
A meeting of the State Cabinet chaired by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar approved the amount for payment as principal to four banks that had provided loans to 969 victims of the Bhagalpur communal riots, which claimed over 1,000 lives. This will be part of the rehabilitation programme for the victims.
The amount will be paid to Allahabad Bank, State Bank of India, Punjab National Bank and UCO Bank after they waive the interest amount and withdraw cases against defaulters, Cabinet Secretary A K Chouhan told reporters.
Till the banks comply with the government's instructions, the amount will lie with the district magistrates of Bhagalpur and Banka where the loanees hailed from, he said.
In another important decision, the cabinet cleared the proposal to post at least four specialist doctors -- one gynaecologist, one paediatrician, a general practitioner and a anesthetist -- at every public health centre in 533 blocks, Chouhan said.
The step is being taken to conform to the Indian Public Health Standard guidelines, he said.
