R.S. Gavai takes oath as Bihar Governor


PATNA: Ramkrishna Suryabhanji Gavai on Thursday took oath as the Governor of Bihar. He succeeded West Bengal Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi, who held additional charge of the post.
Patna High Court Chief Justice J. N. Bhatt administered the oath of office to Mr. Gavai at the Raj Bhawan.
Among those present on the occasion were Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi and Assembly Speaker Udai Narain Chaudhary.
The post fell vacant after Buta Singh resigned in January after the Supreme Court had indicted him for his decision to dissolve the Assembly last year.
During his brief talk with reportersMr. Gavai said he accepted the responsibility because he felt it would be a challenging job.
He said the people of Bihar need not be disheartened about the progress of the State as he was confident it would steadily improve in the coming years.
Denying that his role would be confined to the precincts of the Raj Bhawan, Mr. Gavai said he was aware of his rights andwould regularly brief the President.
He said he would have good relations with the State Government.
He stressed the need to improve education in the State, apart from focussing on agriculture.
