Girl students raise awareness about breastfeeding

PATNA: Tinned milk powder is inferior in comparison to breast milk. To spread awareness about it, more than 700 girl students from five city-based schools formed a human chain near Maurya Lok on Monday morning. Students, carrying posters and banners, drew the attention of passers by. They spread the social message, which was the main purpose of the programme, said Geeta Jain, chairperson of Adhar, a cooperative formed for empowering women. The programme was jointly organised by Inner Wheel of Pataliputra, Unicef and ICDS. Girls were informed about the importance of breast milk and it had no alternative for a child upto six months. The milk immunises the new born, shielding them from various kinds of disease, said Jain, who is also a teacher. She said the programme was organised on the eve of the Breastfeeding Week which will begin on Tuesday to spread awareness about Infant Milk Substitute Act. Under the Act, there is a total ban on the promotion of tinned milk powder through media, said Jain, adding that multinational companies were trying to promote powder milk. But, with the Act coming into effect, there is a blanket ban on such advertisements. Members of Inner Wheel Club said their organisation has been trying to remove the wrong notions about breastfeeding as it is a boon for any child. The club, as a part of the Breastfeeding Week, would be organising an interactive seminar on August 5 for the students of Magadh Mahila College.
