Nitish govt clears 8 new sugar mill complexes

In a bid to give a boost to the production of sugar and allied products in Bihar, the Nitish Kumar government has cleared proposals for setting up eight new multi-purpose sugar mill complexes involving an estimated investment of Rs 2,157 crore.
Informing this, an official spokesman on Saturday said the sugar complexes proposed to be set in Madhubani, East Champaran, Saran, Muzaffarpur, Madhepura, Begusarai and Nalanda districts would have the capacity of crushing 65,000 tonne sugarcane per day.
In addition to this, the complexes have power generation units, which together would produce 196 MW of electricity once the multi-purpose sugar complexes were made operational, he said. These sugar complexes would also consist of distillery plants, which would have the capacity to produce 720 kilo litre distillery, he added.
The state government had also decided to expand the capacity of five existing operational sugar mills, he added.
Efforts were also underway for increasing the production of sugarcane through scientific training of farmers in Bihar, the spokesman said.
