BIHARSHARIF: Bihar's ruling Janata Dal (United) retained Nalanda Lok Sabha seat with its candidate Ram Swaroop Prasad inflicting a crushing defeat on Rashtriya Janata Dal-backed Independent Arun Kumar by 1,17,752 lakh votes.
While Prasad polled 1,71,592 votes, Kumar, a former Lok Sabha member from Jehanabad, secured 53,840 votes.
Earlier, confusion prevailed about the margin of JD(U) nominee's victory with sources in the office of the Nalanda district magistrate-cum-returning officer putting it at 1.14 lakh.
Communist Party of India's Gaya Singh, a former Rajya Sabha member, who had the support of Ram Vilas Paswan's LJP, Congress, Nationalist Congress Party and Communist Party of India-Marxists, finished a poor third.
The by-election to the seat was necessitated by the resignation of Nitish Kumar on becoming the chief minister.
