New Delhi: Bihar defeated Jharkhand 2-0 on Thursday to win the women's 29th Football Championship title. Bihar always seemed the better side and egged on by some 200 schoolchildren at the Delhi Public School (R K Puram) ground, got the goals though Ranjeeta Singh and Poonam Singh. Jharkhand players looked like a hapless lot and wandered aimlessly on the field. It took Bihar only 24 minutes to seal the fate in their favour.
After being fed by a long cross from Neelam Sreevastav in the box, Ranjeeta's left footer swivelled past Jharkhand goalie Sreestha Minj in the 12th minute. Jharkhand got a good chance in the 15th minute to score the equaliser but forward Teresia Soren squandered an easy chance. A wrong pass by Bihar defender Neelam Srivastav saw Soren clear off goalie Aditi Kumari but the Jharkhand forward failed to get to the ball. The lead was doubled in the 24th minute when Poonam pounced on a square pass by Sapna and guided into the Jharkhand net.Bihar outclassed Jharkhand in all the departments and their strikers Anju Kumar and Ranjeeta made regular inroads into the latter's defence. In the second half, Jharkhand looked desperate to pull back one but failed to get the better of Bihar defenders. The event also marked 100 years of Satyagraha and the birth anniversary of Kasturba Gandhi, wife of Mahatma Gandhi. "It is good to see women coming up and taking up a game like football. We should empower the women and provide opportunities to them," said Tara Gandhi Bhattacharjee, the vice-chairperson of Gandhi Smriti.
