The Bihar government, on Friday, celebrated the 118th birth anniversary of the freedom fighter Swami Sahajanand at a function organized at Sri Krishna Memorial Hall in Patna where leaders paid rich tributes to the great champion of farmers and pledged to fulfill his dreams of a agriculturally rich society.The event was inaugurated by Magsaysay award winner Rajendra Singh Rana who appealed to all to join hands with the government in its fight against recurring drought and flooding in the state.Singh also criticized the big companies trying to usurp lands owned by farmers calling them 'the modern day zamindars'.Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, several of his ministers, former Bihar Chief Minister Jagannath Mishra and many others participated in the event that also featured religious songs presented by the Information and Public Relations Department.At a separate event held in honor of Swami Sahjanand at Patna Planetarium, Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi appealed to the youths of Bihar to not go blindly for conventional jobs and instead enter into the field of farming that offered many lucrative, enriching incentives not available in other professions."Farming is not what it used to be a few decades ago. It is very scientific and with the new technology and tools available now, the agricultural sector is simply waiting to explode," Modi said. He also announced the government's decision to install a life-size statue of the freedom fighter and an agricultural research center named after Sahjanand.Similar events were organized by various government and private outfits each emphasizing the need for policies favorable to Bihar farmers.
