A new international university is under plan upon the site of ancient Nalanda University, the Buddhism knowledge center some 1,000 years ago in today's north Indian state Bihar, according to an official Wednesday.
The detailed project report of the proposed Nalanda International University has been submitted to the Bihar Chief Minister for clearance by the Educational Consultants of India, a consulting educational company Under the Ministry of Human Resources Development, said M. M. Jha, Bihar Human Resources Development Commissioner-cum-Secretary.
The university will have a campus of 202.5 hectares and be fully residential, he said.
The university plans to hire 46 foreign teachers and one of its departments, the School of languages, would offer Under Graduate courses in Persian, Chinese, Korean, Japanese and other foreign languages.
"We are very close to realizing the dream. Like the ancient Nalanda, this university will also establish linkages with 200 villages to create the same ambiance and benefit the local populace,"Jha said.
The ancient Nalanda University was a center of Buddhism learning from 427 AD to 1197 AD. At its prime time, the university had attracted scholars from 93 countries and home to over 10,000 students and 2,000 teachers.
