Bihar Government has constituted a special taskforce headed by former union minister and renowned physician C P Thakur for eradicating kala-azar in the State by 2010. This was stated by Health and Family Welfare Minister Chandra Mohan Rai in the State Assembly. Making a statement during zero-hour in the house, Rai said the taskforce was constituted in view of spread of the disease in some parts of the State which had adversely affected an extremely backward caste (mussahar). Expressing serious concern over the increase in the cases of the disease, Rai said the taskforce was undertaking survey of the areas where people were suffering from the disease. Measures were also being suggested to be taken for their cure. The Minister said Union Ministry for Rural Development had allotted Rs 18 crore and agreed to provide more funds for construction of pucca houses for the mussahar (rat catchers) families, worst-affected by the disease. Besides, the state government had also decided to ensure free-of-cost treatment of people suffering from the disease at government hospitals where meals for the patients and their attendants would be arranged by the authorities, Rai said.
