Patna: Shyam Ratan is very happy. He's been able to turn his mother's dream into reality. He has just cracked the IIT entrance exams.
"Bas mummy ka hope ka hai. Ussi ko maintain karna hai. Aur age badhate chalna hai. Jiwan hai, dekhate hai kya hota hai, (It was my mother's dream, I am just trying to fulfill it. Let's see what happens from now on. It's life after all)," Shyam says.
Shyam Ratan is the son of a private nurse. "Main kabhi sochi nahi thi ki mere bache se ek bujhate hue chirag ko roshani milega. Ye saab Anand aur IG Abhayanand sir ka karishma hai ki mera beta pass ho gaya (I didn't even imagine my son can do it. For me, it's a flicker of hope in the dying light)," Sobha Devi, Shyam's mother who is a private nurse by profession, says.
Bright young students of Bihar have shown that nothing is impossible. They have broken set rules and proven people wrong. It doesn't matter where they came from or who their parents were. They are the power performers determined to move ahead come what may.
Like Shyam, Mani has also cracked IIT-JEE in spite of his financial constraints. Mani's father is a housekeeping staff in a hotel. "Apna to yaha se earning hua. Ghar par kuch kheti bari thi, usko bhi bech diya. Baap dada ka jo sampati tha, kuch jamin tha, usko bhi bech diyaa. Isssi bache ke chalet, (I supported him with whatever I could earn from my job. I even had to sell off my farmland and whatever land I inherited from my forefathers)," Mani's father Lalan Singh reveals.
Helping out these students is a group of dedicated teachers who don't care about tution fees when it comes to bright kids. They also provide food and boarding facilities if needed.
"Hum kabhi bhi pital ko sona nahi bana sakte. Usko toh sona hona hi parega. Hum kewal usko sona se kundan bana sakte hai. Ladka parne mein bahut achcha tha, uska kewal humne shape up kiya. Teachers' ka contribution 5 to 10 per cent hota hai (we can't make gold out of brass. It has to be gold in the first place. We can only convert gold into ornaments. The contribution of a teachers in these cases is only 5 to 10 per cent)," Anil Parmar, Shyam's chemistry teacher, says.
As many as 200 students from Patna alone have qualified for the IIT this year. And it's not only an IIT success story.
Soft-spoken and shy Manish, son of a government clerk, has secured 99.4 per cent in Class 10 exams of CBSE this year.
"Sayad mere jiwan mein yeh pehla mauka hai ki mujhe mere andar se, dil se khushi hui hai, (probably, this is the first time I have been so happy at heart)," Manish says.
