PATNA: People from different sections of the society stressed the need for sitting together under one umbrella to work for rebuilding a new Bihar which would be free of violence and all forms of discrimination.
They were participating in a talk organised at the initiative of Aashray Abhiyan-Jan Kalyan Gramin Vikas Samiti here on Tuesday.
The talk was divided in three sections - intervention made by Aashray Abhiyan and the invitation extended to society to join hands in raising the issue of urban poor, issues affecting the people and demands of the poor.
Thomas Kocherry, president of International Fisher Workers' Movement, talked of globalisation and its impact on the poor and the middle class.
He cautioned the gathering against big giants who pose a threat to country's national growth. Eviction of the urban and rural population in the name of development was robbing the poor of their means of livelihood, he added.
The main theme of the talk was that people should come out of their deep slumber and protest against what is happening.
The speakers, mainly comprising advocates, professors and social activists, stressed the need for drawing consensus instead of discussing important issues inside their houses. They also focussed on awakening the consciousness of the people.
