State observes Shiksha Diwas

PATNA: Bihar became the first state on Sunday to observe the birth anniversary of country's first education minister Maulana Abul Kalam Azad as Education Day. At a function organised to commemorate the occasion at S K Memorial Hall, chief minister Nitish Kumar conferred Mukhyamantri Samagra Shiksha Puraskar to Desri block of Vaishal district. The award was given to Desri block head, block education officer and district education officer for maximum number of enrolment and attendance in schools.

Nitish recalled that last year, the state government had written to the Centre urging it to take steps for observing the birth anniversary of the first education minister as Shiksha Divas at national level. The suggestion was made by an organisation, Flame, headed by Dr A A Hai when it observed this day last year. The state government had then conceded this demand and congratulated human resources development (HRD) department for organising the function. Seeing the enthusiasm of the people, Nitish announced that the government would organise the function at Gandhi Maidan in a big way next year.

Nitish described Azad as a man of multi-dimensional character, who as country's first education minister, strengthened the educational system. He should be accorded respect as per his stature, the CM said. Nitish said illiteracy was one of the causes for state's backwardness. He said education and health occupied important place in the development of mankind. The state government was making all efforts for development in education, he said. The CM took the opportunity to state the steps taken by the state government in the education sector. He said teachers were being appointed in the ratio of 1:40 that is one teacher for 40 students.

He said school buildings were being constructed on a largescale. Nitish also handed over promotional award of Rs 50,000 to successful candidates in IIT examinations — Gulshan Verma (Gaya), Raju Kumar (Hajipur), Mukesh Kumar Poddar (Simariya, Begusarai), Manoj Kumar (Bainganiya, Sitamarhi), Satish Kumar (Udwant Nagar, Rohtas) and Abhishek Narayan Sharma (Khijarsarai, Gaya) on the occasion. He also gave away prizes to Gudiya, Rupesh Kumar and Manjit Kumar, who stood first, second and third respectively in drawing competition, "Hamare Sapno Ka Vidyalaya". Prominent among others who addressed the gathering included HRD minister Brishen Patel, Khuda Baksh Oriental Public Library director Imtiaz Ahmad and HRD principal secretary Anjani Kumar Singh.

Meanwhile, several other functions were organised by political parties and educational institutions in the state capital. The department of bio-technology, A N College, also organised a function to mark the occasion. Another function was organised by the Bihar Pradesh Bharat Sevak Samaj. BPCC organised a function at its party office at Sadaquat Ashram.
