Not very far from my hometown in Bihar, India, there lie ruins of Nalanda University. In fifth century AD, the university was a place of great learning. Today, historians call it the world's oldest university. It attracted students from all over Asia. Discplines like Mathematics, Science, Astronomy, Buddhism, Tantrism etc were taught there. The university is being revived, but of course, the education imparted there would be modern, with emphasis on IT, Science & Technology.
After Second World War (1939-45), America emerged a superpower. America’s greatest strength was its education system. America provided best education in Engineering, Management, and Science & Technology. The IT revolution has added more to the reputation of the American education.
Though politically, India tilted towards Soviet Union, it too benefited greatly from the American education. Everyone in India dreamt of going to America for higher studies. It was akin to going to Oxford or Cambridge for higher studies before the Second World War. Though the American education remains what it is, the scenario, albeit slowly, is undergoing a change.
According to a recent report, India, too, is fast becoming a coveted destination amongst global managers for a professional stint. India is drawing students across the world. The number of foreign students enrolled in various Indian institutions has seen over three-fold rise. The number in year 2000 was 6988, and 2006 the number is 25,947. Remarkable is that the largest number of students coming to India is from the US!
Though I admire the trend, I still am a lover of American education.
