CII favours granting special state status to Bihar

Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) President Sunil Bharti Mittal today favoured according special state status to Bihar to enable it emerge as an investment hub.
After a meeting with CII's members in Eastern region and Bihar chapter, Mittal told reporters here that he would also take up the issue of special state status at the national council meeting of CII in New Delhi in March, as also with the central government.
"Bihar requires special state status... If not the entire state, a few districts having the potential of (attracting) private and public sector investments"
Special status would allow industries wishing to set up shop in the state avail of certain tax concessions.
"We will definitely raise our voice," Mittal, who heads the Bharti Group, said in the presence of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi and a host of senior government officials who attended the interactive session.
Mittal said Bihar has huge scope of investment, particularly in telecom, agriculture, food processing, tourism and sugarcane and if these sectors were properly tapped then the state would emerge as a major investment hub and one of the most developed states in the country in the near future.
Kumar said besides infrastructure development, the main thrust of the state government would be developing the agriculture sector for which the government was preparing a road map in consultation with the experts.He said the government had convened a kisan panchayat here on February 17 in which suggestions of successful farmers would be sought and then only the road map for developing agriculture would be made public.
Stating that Bihar has great potential, Kumar asked the CII president to help Bihar in its skill development endeavour by setting up ITIs and contributing in the field of education.
The meeting was also addressed by Deputy CM Sushil Kumar Modi, deputy chairman of the State Planning Commission and Biswadip Gupta, Chairman, CII eastern region.
Bihar Development Commissioner S Vijaraghvan presented a power point presentation on the Prospects and potential of industry in Bihar.
