Holi & Saali

Holi mein luto saali se mazaa
Jija ke jeans kari dheela Holi mein
Dheera se rangwa dalu re devra bheetra lagela pala re
Choli bheej gail, devran ke man paseejh gail

As the nation gets ready to celebrate Holi next week, cassettes, CDs and VCDs containing raunchy Bhojpuri songs that capture the bhang-induced, flirty character of the rustic north have hit stores and pavements. Holi, suddenly, is about sex.

Bhojpuri Holi songs have such a huge mass market, that singers and lyricists are working overtime to cater to the hungry millions. The hot songs this year will not disappoint. Priced between Rs 30 and Rs 40, the albums are easily affordable to the types whom Raj Thackeray loathes. "Our buyers are mostly the bachelor boys from north India who work on constructions sites, drive taxis or are in similar low-paying jobs," says Ajit Kohli, spokesperson for T-Series, the music firm which has come out with over two dozen Bhojpuri Holi albums this year.

For some reason, the hottest Bhojpuri Holi songs preach incest. Saali (sister-in-law), jija (brother-in-law), devar (husband's younger brother) and bhabhi (elder brother's wife) are the chief characters and they are all requested to cohabit. In these songs, flirtatious women have wild dreams. "Sister's husband makes a mess/But the sister-in-law is upbeat," croons Bhojpuri superstar singer, Manoj Tiwari, whose Mumbai office was ransacked by Raj Thackeray's boys recently.

In a clutter of obscenely suggestive albums one title however stands out. It is called Internet Holi. For, "the changing times," Tiwari says. "Men away from home cannot celebrate Holi with their wives or saalis. My album asks them to celebrate Holi on the internet," says Tiwari from the sets of Bhojpuria Don, a film that he insists is not a remake of the original Don. His album also lampoons politicians. As one song goes, "Lalu ki Holi mein, Modi Narendra dhoti mein nara dalata (In Lalu's Holi, Narendra Modi puts string in his dhoti)".

Lalu Prasad Yadav had popularised Patna's kurta phaad Holi where revelers tear each other's kurta. Vikram Kumar, a Patna-based photographer, recalls, "We would reach his house and slam his door with a lathi, shouting 'kahan chhupal hai sala Lalu?'. Lalu too would respond with a similar abuse. Dressed in white kurta, he would put colour on Rabri's face and play pranks with us."

The kurta phaad and choli phaad Holis are harmless in comparison to the famous lathmar Holi of Barsana village near Mathura. Wielding lathis, swarms of women attack their men. Bruised and beaten, the men try to be brave, laughing, singing and spraying colour.

Many artistes of the Bhojpuri film industry who are stranded in Mumbai miss the gaiety of the festival. Bipin Bahar, the busiest Bhojpuri bard, fondly remembers celebrating Holi in Bihar. "We would steal dung-cakes and wood pieces from neighbours' houses to make bonfires on the previous night of Holi. The neighbours' wives would abuse us for the theft. We would then get drunk and roam the village, beating drums and crooning songs."

Bahar has penned several hit Holi numbers, including the one about a woman asking her brother-in-law to pour colour on her carefully as she feels cold inside. Interestingly, the influence of Bollywood's Holi songs is shrinking in North India. Since mainstream Hindi cinema today believes that only the metros and multiplexes make commercial sense, it has largely ignored the heartland. Bhojpuri films have take over this space.

"Bhojpuri cinema is no longer fringe," says singer Kalpana who sizzles at stage shows and in steamy Bhojpuri videos. Kalpana has cut two Holi albums this year—Kalpana Ki Holi and Khelo Khelo Ho Fagua.

For Kalpana, Holi means sharing unbridled fun. "Holi songs are not bhajans. I try to live up to those expectations," she says.

Sali is not sister. Shes is adhi gharwali. Sister in law is English (hence a christian perception of relationship) . Just like hindus consider cousins as siblings, christians marry with cousins . Their percepton of cousin is not of bro-sis hence jija saali jokes are not incest. If that is, what would be the marriage among cousins be called as.
