Patna Doctor Ajay Kumar chosen for the prestigious Dr BC Roy National Award-2006

Patna, May 2: Bihar people, otherwise suffering relatively “poor” health services, are now cheering for Patna doctor Ajay Kumar who has been chosen for the prestigious Dr BC Roy National Award-2006 for his work in socio-medical relief.

Dr Ajay Kumar is the former president of the Indian Medical Association and is at present the president of the Urological Society of India.

Medical Council of India that gives away the Dr BC Roy awards started the awards in 1976 to perpetuate the memory of Bidhan Chandra Roy.

Kumar is among 30 doctors from across the country to get the award, which would be presented on July 1, by the President at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. The award of 2006 and 2007 would be presented jointly. On receiving this award Dr.Kumar said: “The award is not a recognition of an individual feat. It proves a point to the medical fraternity on behalf of medical professionals in a much ‘condemned’ Bihar.”

Ajay Kumar, a urologist who spends most of his time in Bihar, said: “I will continue to raise Bihar’s health issues at various forums. And, I will make the current Union health department change its opinion about Bihar’s doctors and medicos.”

“We have been promised an All India Institute of Medical Sciences. In the past four years only the boundary walls had come up,” he regretted. The award, he said, was “special”. “The medical fraternity celebrates Doctors’ Day on July 1, the day Roy was born. He was a special man,” Ajay added.
