College scientists' bid to launch project

PATNA: The research scientists of local A N College are planning to launch a pilot project on arsenic mitigation in rural parts of arsenic-contaminated areas in Bihar.

Scientists of KTH University of Stockholm, Sweden, have shown eagerness to support this venture under the SASMIT (Sustainable Arsenic Mitigation) Project of Sweden.

A K Ghosh of environment and water management department and Nupur Bose of geography department, who have just returned from Valencia, Spain, after attending the second International Conference on `Arsenic from nature to human', pointed out that the project would be based on a comprehensive arsenic mitigation model, having gravity driven filter and supported by bio-remediation techniques for arsenic sludge management.

A number of arsenic eating microbes -arsenic munchers - isolated from the soils of Maner near Patna by Ghosh for the first time in Bihar have been used in the workable model.

Phytoremediation by phragmytis karka (angiosperm) has also been successfully tested by him. This model has been formulated keeping in mind the physical and economic constraints in Bihar.

The highlight of this model is that it bypasses electricity consumption at all stages, and can be safely implemented in the arsenic-affected areas of the state with community participation.

Their inter-disciplinary paper titled, `Emerging constraints in mitigation strategies adopted in the arsenic-contaminated areas of Bihar, India,' was presented by Nupur Bose, who also received full scholarship from the organizers of this conference for this purpose.

About 300 scientists of different disciplines from other countries attended the conference, too.
