Annual meet of PU turned stormy

PATNA: The annual meeting of the Patna University (PU) senate scheduled for Saturday is likely to be a stormy one as some teacher-members have
reportedly decided to take on the authorities for non-fulfilment of their pending demands. Besides, several students' organisations have also threatened to disturb the meeting to protest the inordinate delay in holding elections to the university students union.

However, PU authorities, on their part, have made elaborate security arrangements for smooth conduct of the meeting. The meeting also assumes significance in the view of the election of teaching and non-teaching representatives to the highest executive body of the university, the syndicate. Election to the finance committee will also be held.

In an interesting development, this year, teachers are contesting the syndicate elections in two groups. While one group comprising the sitting members namely Amar Nath Singh, S B Lal and Vinay Soren is seeking re-election, another group consists of new faces namely Amarendra Mishra, Iftekhar Ahmad and D P Kamal. As many as three members, including B N College history teacher P K Poddar, have already been elected unopposed.

The senate is scheduled to approve a Rs 96-crore deficit budget of the university for the next financial year (2009-10). Besides, regulations and ordinances of some new courses would also come up for discussion and approval.
