PATNA: Chief minister Nitish Kumar inaugurated the newly renovated war memorial at the Bihar Regimental Centre (BRC) at the Danapur Cantonment on
Friday. The war memorial was renovated at a cost of Rs 15 lakh at the BRC.
Nitish said BRC has been playing a pivotal role in safeguarding the unity and integrity of the country. Officers and jawans of BRC have proved their mettle both in wars and operations against insurgency being carried out across the country. "They are second to none in valour and courage. People of the state are proud of their achievements and sacrifices for the country," he said.
Nitish, who interacted directly with jawans and war widows, said that the state government would make every possible effort to provide facilities to war widows in the state. "The government is all for their rehabilitation," he said adding Danapur is the second oldest cantonment of the country after Barrackpore in West Bengal.
Nitish also visited the prestigious Maurya Museum and lauded efforts of BRC for preserving such historical monuments, including rare weapons of the World Wars, there.
Major General Rajinder Singh, VSM, said the chief minister's visit to BRC would boost the morale of the jawans. "The war memorial at BRC epitomizes supreme sacrifices of jawans and officers as well as their utmost devotion to duty," he said.
A large number of BRC officers, jawans, war widows and other civilians were present at the function. Nitish laid wreaths at the war memorial as a mark of respect to all those officers and jawans who sacrificed their lives for the country.
Danapur sub-area commander Brig. Abhimanyu Raut, BRC commandant P S Rathi, BRC deputy commandant Col Manjit Singh, Col S K Prusty, Lt Col Kunal and many senior officers graced the occasion. According to Lt Col Kunal, names of about 300 martyrs of the Bihar Regiment, including Maj Sandeep Unnikrishnan who was killed in the recent terror attacks in Mumbai, figure in the war memorial.
Parents of Maj Unnikrishnan, who was honoured with Ashoka Chakra on Republic Day, would visit BRC soon at the invitation of the regiment.
