PATNA: Nobel laureate and chairman of the mentor group of the proposed Nalanda International University
(NIU) Amartya Sen said on Friday that NIU
will have all characteristics of the old one.
“The old Nalanda University had Budhhism for students, but it was not a Buddhist university,” Sen said adding the two-day meeting of the mentor group in Bihar has decided to add a school of information science and technology to the already six proposed faculties — peace and Buddhism, international relationship, history, language & literature, development & management and ecology & environment.
The mentor group has come to Bihar for the first time after the revival of the ancient Nalanda University was mooted by Bihar CM Nitish Kumar.
Sen, however, refused to give a deadline for the establishment of the global university. “There can be no deadline for establishing a world class university,” he said stressing the group does not want to compromise on standards. “The mentors will submit a concrete proposal at the next summit of south-east Asian countries which, in turn, will send its proposal to the Government of India to act accordingly,” he said.
“Even in this global economic slump you will be surprised at the flow of funds,” he said.
