Move to promote Ganga river valley culture

PATNA: A section of intelligentsia, lawyers, social and cultural workers on Sunday decided to organize a national level cultural meet here on
June 4 to focus on the Ganga river valley culture and environment veering around the people of Nishad community.

It was decided under the aegis of Ganga Mukti Andolan, whose agitational methods in the 1980s led to abolition of the `jalkar zamindari' on the river Ganga by a legislative Act in 1991. The meeting of the Andolan was organized by Prabhakar, a Patna High Court lawyer, on Sunday.

Among the participants were social worker Prabhat Kumar, lawyer Satya Prakash Sinha, Nirmal from Sangharsh Vahini, Arvind Kumar Nishad from Chhatra JD(U), and Ram Bhajan Singh from Rashtriya Samata Party, among others. The speakers stressed on the need to salvage the dying cultural symbols of the Ganga river valley, which runs across several Bihar districts.
