PATNA: Police say a group of about 100 suspected Maoist rebels have shot and killed six police officers in eastern India.
Local police official Neelmani says the officers were gunned down Monday during a religious function in Bihar state where rebels control much of the territory.
Neelmani, who uses one name, says authorities suspect Maoist rebels in the attack. An investigation is under way.
The rebels, known as Naxalites after the village where the movement was founded, frequently target police and government officials. The shooting occurred about 50 miles (80 kilometers) south of Patna, the capital of Bihar.
Last week, suspected Maoist rebels killed 15 policemen in a jungle in western India.
