Ahmedabad: In a bid to rehabilitate flood-affected people, Gujarat Vidyapith has adopted Udhampur village in Supol district of Bihar.
The first team of 40 postgraduate students left for that state on Monday.
Teams will go to work in Bihar in phases till May. The entire relief work has been carried out by Vidyapith's Disaster Management Unit. Issues like education, health and livelihood will be priorities while undertaking rehabilitation.
"Udhampur in north Bihar got affected severely in last year's floods when Koshi river left many marooned. Initially, we started a control room for relief. Now, it's time to start rehabilitation work. Students from different disciplines will volunteer for the cause and learn from reality,'' says Arun Gandhi, coordinator of National Service Scheme (NSS) at Vidyapith. The programme has been named Jeevan Nibhav'.
The first team includes students of physical education (PE) and rural management. First, they will do need assessment to get to know the exact situation. Also, recreational activities conducted by PE students will help flood-affected children come out of the trauma,'' says Jagdish Gothi, team leader and head of PE postgraduation department at Sadra.
