'Caste no longer an issue in Bihar'

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Tuesday accused his arch rivals RJD president Lalu Prasad and LJP chief Ramvilas Paswan of "igniting" caste sentiments but added that it has ceased to be an issue in the State.
"Both Lalu and Paswan tried to inflame caste sentiments during the ongoing elections but failed. Caste as an issue in elections has been relegated to the background," Mr. Kumar told media persons here.
He said development and improvement in law and order were the twin issues that would fetch votes for the NDA.
Lalu and Paswan sought to "ignite caste sentiments" for votes but they should realise that this will lead to only a small section of people supporting them while the NDA has succeeded in mobilising support of people of all castes and religions, Mr. Kumar said.
Referring to the Bhagalpur communal riots of 1989, he said nearly 1000 people, "mostly Muslims" were killed in it.
"Lalu patronised a prominent accused of the riots, who was even rewarded by the erstwhile RJD government for promoting communal harmony."
On Supreme Court ordering an inquiry into Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi's involvement in the communal riots, Mr. Kumar said, "I am confident that necessary action will follow."
