3000 convicted in NDA-ruled Bihar

Patna: Over 3,000 persons were convicted under different sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Arms Act after the NDA government came to power in Bihar 10 months ago.

Additional Director General of Police (Headquarters) Abhayanand said on Saturday that efforts of the police to ensure speedy trials across the state had borne fruit with over 3,000 undertrials being convicted in the past 10 months

.A total of 852 persons were convicted and awarded punishment under different sections of the IPC during the current month.While 208 convicts were awarded life imprisonment, 623 were awarded 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and 21 to less than 10 years under the Arms Act and different sections of the IPC.After becoming chief minister of Bihar, Nitish Kumar had said that one of the prime areas of concern of his government would be to control crime in the state.The ADG said Nalanda topped the list of sentencing under the Arms Act followed by Rohtas and Purnia districts. During the last month, 235 persons were awarded life imprisonment by different courts across the state and since January 2006 more 800 persons were awarded life imprisonment, Abhayanand said.
