An Ayurveda practitioner, who claims to have cured over 100 polio patients with his herbal formula, is desperately seeking approval for the medicine from the government so that it be used to tackle a spurt in cases of the crippling disease. Pancham Kumar Das (43) of Harpurdak locality of Forbesganj in Bihar's Araia district, said the medicine made from cinchona and marigold base was the result of a lifetime's labour by his father Yogeshwar Lal Das, who collected herbs from forest and treated polio patients. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, during his tenure as an MP in 1993, raised a question in Lok Sabha and demanded that the herbal medicine, which has been successfully tested on polio patients, be used in government hospitals, Das said today. "Now that he is the Chief Minister, I request Kumar to pursue the case by ordering a clinical test of the herbal mixture. If it is okayed, he should order its use in government hospitals," das said. Speaking about the development of his medicine, Das claimed, "I learnt a lot from my father and after his death in 1984, I started treating villagers." India has recorded a sudden spurt in polio this year, with 522 cases registered so far. Only 66 cases were recorded last year.
