Stamps in Honor of Chhath, Renu, Bismillah Khan, and Sarwar

After years of inordinate delay, the Postal Department, after holding a meeting of the Philately Advisor Committee (PAC) in New Delhi recently, has decided to honor three of the state's eminent personalities and a quintessential Bihari festival by issuing special commemorative stamps next year.Besides stamps on Bihar's very own Phanishwar Nath Renu, the author of several stories including 'Maila Anchal' on which the film 'Teesri Kasam' featuring Raj Kapoor and Wahida Rahman was based, former Bihar Assembly chairperson Ghulam Sarwar, and world-renowned shehnai player Ustad Bismillah Khan, the Postal Department will also issue a stamp on Chhath festival to spread awareness about it in other states. The philately society of Bihar had been struggling to convince the Postal Department to honor these luminaries and the Chhath festival for last three years but nothing positive came out of it until this week when the department agreed to issue stamps to felicitate Renu, Sarwar, Khan and the state's most revered Hindu festival Chhath. The state was represented by philatelists Dr. R. S. Gandhi, Pradeep Jain, and Dr. Razi Ahmed of Gandhi Sangrahalay.

Maila Aanchal was a novel by 'Renu', while 'Teesari Kasam' was a different story.
