Bihar heading towards unprecedented economic growth: Modi

Patna: Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Modi on Friday said that the state was heading towards an unprecedented economic growth in the post-Independence period.

Modi, who also holds the finance portfolio, after presenting the economic survey 2007-08 in the state Assembly told reporters that the the Gross State Domestic Product rose to 16 pe cent in the last financial year from minus 4.8 per cent in 2001-02.

Modi said while Patna, Munger and Begusarai recorded the highest per capita Gross District Domestic Product at Rs 31,441 Rs 10,087 and Rs 9,312 respectively, north Bihar districts Araria, Sitamarhi and Sheohar had the lowest per capita GDDP.

Modi said a number of steps had been taken to build a government of probity and improve law and order conditions. During the past two years of NDA rule in the state, there has been a significant fall in most major crimes such as murder, dacoity and kidnapping for ransom.

While murders committed in the state fell by more than 12 per cent in 2007 as compared to 2006, kidnapping for ransom came down by 54 per cent, Modi said quoting the survey.

He said some international development agencies including the World Bank and the ADB had extended loan assistance for a number of development programmes. The total assistance by the WB and the ADB in the form of loan and grant would be to the extent of Rs 8300 crore which would be released over a period of six years.
