Patna: Use of ethanol-doped-petrol will revive Bihar's sugarcane industry and generate rural jobs if the central government allows its use and supply, said the state's Minister for Sugarcane Development Nitish Mishra."It (ethanol-doped-petrol) will certainly help to revive the sugarcane industry because more cultivation and production will take place to meet the demand for the ethanol blend petrol," Mishra said here.Hundreds of sugarcane farmers and sugar mills going through a bad phase may be directly benefited by the use of ethanol-doped-petrol."The state government will make a formal request soon to the central government to allow use of ethanol-doped-petrol," a state government official said. This will also attract investors to set up new sugar mills in the state, he added.Ethanol is a liquid alcohol made directly or indirectly from sugarcane. Ethanol is also a renewable source of energy made by fermenting any biomass high in carbohydrates. It is most commonly produced from field corn and sugarcane, but is also made from other grains. The government aims to revive all 15 of the closed state-owned sugar mills to generate adequate income for over 500,000 sugarcane farmers. In a bid to encourage investors, the state has also announced incentives for setting up new sugar mills.A few years ago, India joined the race for alternative energy sources and use of ethanol blend petrol. It decided to allow five percent of ethanol mixing with petrol, which is likely to be increased by 10 percent later.Currently, nine states and four union territories undertake ethanol doping, where the requirement is limited to only 345 million litres. In the world market, Brazil - one of the largest sugarcane producers - uses ethanol blend petrol. The US is the largest single consumer of ethanol.
