Nitish demands air support for anti-naxal operations

New Delhi, Apr 13: Bihar today asked the Centre to provide air support to make the state police more effective in operations against naxalites and other emergencies.Addresing the Second Meeting of the Standing Committee of the Chief Ministers of Naxal affected States, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said such air support units can be established in Bihta (Patna) and Purnea."The Central Government may kindly allocate at least two helicopters in these units," he demanded.Terming naxal violence as a challenge, Kumar said his Government was determined to stop the growing influence of the left-wing extremism and establish 'rule of law' in Bihar.Thirty two out of the 38 districts of the state were affected by naxal problem which was spreading, he said, adding "the problem is in initial stage in many districts and it can be controlled by an effective strategy." Stating that only 14 of the 32 naxal affected districts were covered under the centrally-sponsored Security-Related Expenditure (SRE) Scheme, Kumar requested that the rest 18 naxal affected districts may also be included under it.The Chief Minister also asked the Centre to provide 50 per cent of the Rs 67 crore per annum incurred by the state on the salary of 5,000 ex-army personnel working in Special Auxiliary Force (SAF) on a salary of Rs 10,000 a month.The SAF has been raised by the state in view of the shortage of trained forces, and the need to reduce dependence on central forces.
