Project for jail inmates soon

PATNA: Rajbhawan is all set to launch the 'Vidaya Nirman' project for the inmates of Beur Central jail with a view to ameliorating their lot.

This is the first ever project aimed at reforming the convicted and undertrials in any jail of Bihar.

Governor R S Gavai, who has approved the project, will kick off the project at Beur Central jail in the last week of April.
OSD to governor Krishna Kumar, who conceptualised this project, said the entire project is being sponsored by Nalanda Open University (NOU).

Though being launched on an experimental basis, it it will be introduced in other jails as well in future.

"A team of dedicated people belonging to teaching fraternity from different universities will take part in the project to motivate prisoners to mend their ways and develop some skills to earn their livelihood," he said.

Dwelling at length on the importance of Vidaya Nirman project, Kumar said prisoners lodged in Beur jail are also human beings, who suffer from social stigma.

The basic concept of the project is to give them a new lease of life as well as to bring them into the mainstream after they are released from jail, he said adding every possible effort will be made to bring a desired level of changes in them to live a normal life with family members.
