Bihar Flood Relief by Deccan Herald - Bangalore

DH BIHAR FLOOD RELIEF FUND

Bihar is in the grip of an unprecedented natural disaster with the river Kosi changing course and flooding almost half of the state. It is among the worst natural calamities ever to hit the country.

Over 9,500 villages spread over 20 districts of northern Bihar have been swamped. Many lives have been lost. But it is terrible misery for almost three million people who have been displaced and rendered homeless; they have lost their livelihood. Crops, cattle and all possessions are gone and the affected people are staring into a bleak future.

Rescue, relief and rehabilitation operations in the marooned areas are a logistical nightmare. In this hour of national calamity, we can do our bit to support the hapless people as the government's efforts alone are not adequate.

Deccan Herald has set up a relief fund for the disaster victims with an initial contribution of Rs 1 lakh. We appeal to our readers, schools, colleges, corporates, clubs and associations to contribute generously to this relief effort. Contributions can be made through cheques or bank drafts, drawn in favour of Deccan Herald and Prajavani Relief Trust and sent to our office at 75, M G Road, Bangalore-560 001. Please superscribe the envelope with Deccan Herald Relief Fund.

Contributions can also be made directly to the SB A/C No 200385, Canara Bank, Cantonment Branch, Bangalore 560 001. Names of those contributing Rs 1,000 and above will be published in these columns. The amount collected from this effort will be handed over to the Bihar government's relief fund. The contributions are eligible for exemption under Section 80G of the Income Tax Act.
