Attack on Biharis a matter of shame: CM

Patna, Nov 14: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Friday said it was a shame that people of the state, particularly those who step outside the state for earning a living, were being subjected to violence.

"We should develop Bihar in such a way that people need not go outside the state in search of job. We should develop it in such a way that belonging to the state should be a matter of pride and not that of shame", Kumar said.

Outlining the importance of cooperative societies for the economic development of a state, the chief minister said Bihar would develop Primary Agriculture Cooperative Societies (PACS) as a role model by ensuring free and fair elections in these societies.

"From now onwards there will be free and fair elections for the cooperative societies and the days of elections by raising hands are gone. This will be developed as role model on the pattern of panchayat elections", Kumar said while inaugurating the All India Cooperative Week programme.

Accepting that strong cooperative society was the key for the development of agriculture and rural sector, Kumar said previous governments had ruined the cooperative culture in the state.

Advocating that the government should have least interference in the functioning of cooperative societies, Kumar said the government's role should be restricted only to hold timely elections and audit.

"Our job is to run the government and not to see who is becoming what in these societies", he said.
