Bihar Minister- Nitish Mishra voted MTV Youth Icon

The Times of India Reports :-

PATNA: Not known for producing politicians who are popular with Gen X, Bihar, for a change, can now boast of a politician, whom young countrymen
have voted as an icon.

Minister of state for disaster management Nitish Mishra has been selected as one among the eight young achievers of Pepsi MTV Youth Icons for 2008. He, along with other icons, would now feature on one million Pepsi My cans.

The selection was made through online voting and SMS. The selected eight come from different walks of life. They are fashion designer, food chain owner, boxer, cyber security guru, filmmaker, musician , development professional and, of course, politician. They have been selected from among 30 nominees who were shortlisted from 8,000 plus entries.

The organisers, instead of looking for super achievers, opted for those who have made a difference. And the minister from Bihar with a postgraduate diploma in global political economy from University of Hull, UK, fitted the bill for making it to the list.

As the minister of disaster management in Bihar, he was the driving force behind the rescue operations following the Kosi floods early this year. Supervising one of the biggest rescue operations in the world, Nitish helped evacuate almost 10 lakh people.

Despite coming from a family of politicians, with his uncle late Lalit Narayan Mishra having been the railway minister in the 70s and father Jagannath Mishra a former chief minister of Bihar, entry into politics was not a cakewalk for Nitish as he had to face opposition from the family itself. But a man with firm determination, he entered active politics at 27 and unsuccessfully contested assembly elections in 2000 from Jhanjharpur constituency. Lady Luck, however, smiled on him in 2005 assembly elections and Nitish not only won but also went on the become a minister in the NDA government of the state.

"Entering politics was a conscious decision as I wanted to use my knowledge for development of native people. This award has vindicated my decision," Nitish told TOI on Sunday.

He, however, also understands expectations of people which come with an award. "It is not like basking in the glory of the award, rather it puts pressure on the recipient for doing even better as people expect even more from icons," Nitish said

Kudos to Mr. Nitish Mishra;he is the second after top cop Mr. Nikhil Kumar, son of former Chief Minister Satyendra Narain Sinha & Grand-son of Bihar's first Deputy Chief Mnister cum Finance Minister Dr. A N Sinha, who has made the state proud by earning accolades for his merit.
Mr. Kumar did it by becoming the first Bihari to head elite NSG and the first to be India's Home Secretary. While Nitish has done it well too!
