PATNA: Justice Mridula Mishra of Patna High Court said here on Saturday that the information and communication technology (ICT) coupled with the
power of knowledge can enable women to join the battle for economic, social and political empowerment. It is imperative for a sustainable development that women have access to education
and appropriate need-based technologies, she said.
Inaugurating a two-day national seminar on "Information Technology and Women Empowerment" organised by the Patna University department of Personnel Management and Industrial Relations at Magadh Mahila College here, Justice Mishra pointed out even as the Article 14 of the Indian Constitution grants equal right and opportunity to both men and women, the plight of a majority of Indian women is the same as it was 100 years ago. Unless women have access to education, opportunity and knowledge, they cannot be empowered, she added.
Speaking as the chief guest on the occasion, former chief justice of Punjab and Haryana, Guwahati and Sikkim high courts, Binod Kumar Roy observed that the information technology offers immense opportunities for the comprehensive social and economic development of women all over the world. Without its adoption, there is little chance for countries or regions to develop, he said.
Roy said information technology can fetch well paid jobs and make women stand on their own feet. This will also enhance their social status, he added.
Minister of state for information technology Anil Kumar, who was the guest of honour, pleaded for opening of more ICT institutions for women in the state.
Earlier, organising secretary Sunita Roy welcomed the guests. G C Patro of Orissa delivered the keynote address. K P Singh of PU presided over the function.
