WHO hails BIHAR govt to curb Polio in state


PATNA: The World Health Organisation (WHO) has praised Bihar government's efforts to curb polio menace in the state. It is particularly happy over
decline in the number of cases of P1 type of polio cases compared to previous year.

A WHO team led by Global Health vice-president Jafri P Kopwan called on health minister Nand Kishore Yadav on Wednesday and apprised him of the organisation's view over the achievements made so far on the front of polio eradication.

The team urged the minister to launch an intensive drive in the coming months to make Bihar polio free by the end of 2010.

Polio apart, the WHO team also praised the Bihar government for registering commendable growth on vaccination front. From a lowly 11 per cent, the vaccination percentage has now gone up to 50 per cent which is very close to the national average. The team also stressed the need for further intensifying the vaccination drive in the state.

Special sanitation drive launched in flood-hit Kosi region also figured at Wednesday's meeting and the state government move to undertake vaccination at relief camps and give monetary benefits to the parents of newborn babies also got special praise from the WHO team.

Appreciating the WHO team gesture, Yadav expressed his gratitude to the WHO for extending support to the state government in addressing issues which concern masses.
