JEDDAH: Indian expatriates have joined hands to support poor students in India after a Riyadh-based voluntary organization AHSAS, (Association for Humanitarian Services And Solidarity), came up with this ambitious program.
AHSAS, started by a few enthusiastic and dedicated youths in Riyadh, launched its Jeddah chapter on Thursday and named three persons - Zaki Enam, Ejaz Malik and Khalid Ahmad - as coordinators. The group is a nonprofitable, nonpolitical organization formed for literacy and educational purposes, including, welfare of the underprivileged people in India in general and Bihar and Jharkhand in particular.
Speaking at the function, AHSAS President S.M. Mozaffar said, "Our main objectives are to promote education as a movement of people, enhance social awareness through literacy and facilitate women's empowerment."
The speakers lauded AHSAS for its vision and farsightedness. "In an effort to achieve our goals, the group has been helping poor and needy students since its inception last year. It has sponsored many students in various schools in Patna and Gaya districts of the eastern Indian state of Bihar. The group has also arranged teachers in Tirwah National High School in East Champaran," Mozaffar said.
He said the group has the support of people from all parts of India. It does not raise money or any type of funds; rather the body asks its patrons to adopt children and support them individually, or take up any of the group's projects.
He said that the group has received encouraging support from Indians in Jeddah. "Three people came forward to support 10 poor students in their educational pursuits."
Sharique Noor conducted the proceedings of the program, which was attended by large number of Indians. Firoz Ahmad proposed vote of thanks.
