Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Thursday asked panchayats to advise young couples on how to prevent AIDS.
"Members of the panchayats shall make the young couple aware about the dreaded disease when they turn up for registration of their marriage, which has been made compulsory by the State Government," Kumar told reporters after welcoming a team of Bihar legislators on their return from a 10-day study trip of Thailand on AIDS/HIV.
Asking the MLAs to provide benefit of their experience to the people of the State, Kumar said an initiative from the chosen representatives would definitely create an impact on the people against the disease.
Stating that such trips provided opportunity to connect Bihar with the world, he said they would be organised every year under the aegis of Bihar Legislative Forum.
The members of the team that included besides 10 MLAs chosen from all parties, a woman member of Gaya District Board, Gyanwati Devi, and head of Imamganj block Shankar Prajapati narrated to Kumar their experience in Thailand.
Earlier, Assembly Speaker Uday Narayan Chaudhary welcomed the team and said a large-scale convention would be organised here on December 16 on AIDS/HIV, in which under secretary of UNAIDS Peter Peot and UN country representative in India Mexin Olson would participate.
Another programme would be organised the next day at Imamganj in Gaya, he said.
